LPRng is the Next Generation in LPR software. It supports the standard bsd lpr commands and also supports an System V interface. Other features include lightweight lpr, lpc, and lprm programs, dynamic redirection of print queues, automatic job holding, highly verbose diagnostics, multiple printers serving a single queue, client programs do not need to run SUID root, greatly enhanced security checks and a greatly improved permission and authorization mechanism. The default configuration provides a simple BSD LPR interface, but there are options to modify a wide variety of operational facilities. The companion IFHP print filter can interface to a wide variety of printers, from the latest network based high speed to vintage legacy printers.

Dynamic load balancing can now use user-supplied queue choice criteria at job dispatch time. Configuration facilities have been extended to allow tuning of almost all major system level parameters. Filter support has been extended and enhanced, allowing simple scripts to be specified in the printcap. Accounting scripts and facilities were enhanced. Linux SETUID compromise detection was added to clients. Support for building packages was added to the main distribution source code for ease of system administration and local site distribution generation.
LPRng is now distributed under the GPL and Artistic licenses. This version is basically a set of minor bugfixes and user tweaks, including the fact that checkpc -Ppr will now install/update a single printer queue.
