Most prominently, the new default desktop is GNOME 3. Systemd now replaces SysVinit for increased boot speed and maintainability. A new, more deterministic network device naming scheme was introduced. A new /run directory was introduced as a tmpfs, and /var/run and /var/lock are bind mounted to it. An optional dynamic firewall daemon was added. setroubleshoot was redesigned to make it easier to diagnose SELinux problems. Many other improvements were made. Software updates include KDE 4.6, Xfce 4.8, X.org 1.10, GTK+ 3.0, Libreoffice 3.3.2, Firefox 4, GCC 4.6, GDB 7.3, Python 3.2, and Boost 1.46.

New features include enhanced thin client virtualization, sysadmin enhancements such as IPMI and OpenSCPA support, and developer enhancements such as Rakudo Star (Perl 6), the D language, and GDB improvements. Software updates include KDE 4.5, GNOME 2.32, X11 1.9, OpenOffice 3.3 (RC), Python 2.7, Perl 5.12, Ruby 1.8.7, and Boost 1.44.

New features include automatic print driver installation, automatic language pack installation, a redesigned user account tool, color management to calibrate monitors and scanners, and experimental 3D support for NVIDIA video cards. Further new features include support for installation over the Internet, SSSD authentication for users, updates to NFS, system rollback for the Btrfs file system, better SystemTap probes, a Python 3 stack that can be installed parallel to an existing Python stack, and support for the entire Java EE 6 spec in Netbeans 6.8. Many other enhancements were made.

Major features include improved Webcam support, better video codecs, audio improvements, and better power management. An automatic bug reporting tool, Bluetooth on demand, many virtualization enhancements, and security improvements were also included.
